Alexandre Dumas was one of the most famous French

writers of the 19th century. He is best known for his

historical adventure novels like The Three Musketeers,

The Count of Monte Cristo and The Man in the Iron Mask.

Dumas’ grandfather was a French nobleman who had

settled in Santo Domingo, now part of Haiti. His paternal

grandmother, Marie Louise Cessette Dumas was

African/Caribbean, who had been a slave in the French
